Introduction
I will write about different SEN in my classroom and
reflect on my students. Also I will include different points about SEN
students, I will start with observation the students, SEN in my classroom,
inclusion, accommodations, assi
stive technology, teaching strategies, who is involved, and I will give my opinion and what I learned and can apply it in the future.
Observation the SEN students
in my school
I was in Al Sho'aa KG School, Al Maqam in my school I saw a
child in (KG2 A), he is a special needs and had someone to take care of him
during his class and she follow him everywhere. Unfortunately, I didn't teach
him because he wasn't in my classroom and I'm teaching only (KG2 D) and I can't
go out of my class and leave my MST alone with children, she needs my help
especially when the Arabic teacher went to hospital to deliver her baby. So I
will talk about my students in my class, I had 3 SEN students and their names
are Shamsa, Nayef, and Mayed and all of them about 4-5
years old.
Shamsa has a problem with understanding the outcome first
time, Mayed has a problem he's unable to focus in the classroom like he lives
in his own world, and Nayef has
trouble with holding a pencil. I'm always worried about
Shamsa, when my MST explain her lesson Shamsa came to me to explain the lesson
to her in Arabic and I told my MST about her and she said " try to help as
much as you can to be on task with her friends". She needs further opportunities to explore
the outcomes, maybe some more time to achieve the outcomes.
Inclusion
The policy in the Al Sho'aa KG School was to include all
the normal students with special needs students together in the classroom and
the school didn't use IEP plan with children. My special needs kids studying
with normal children in my classroom and my MST and I deal with them as they
were a normal children because they will feel sad if we treat them differently.
Accommodation, assistive technology, and Teaching strategies
The school is very old and
they don't have a new technology to teach the students. They just depend on the
teachers to help the students so my MST gave Shamsa, the opportunities to explore the outcomes,
or maybe some more time to achieve the outcomes. Use visuals to explain
outcomes and as a last report ask the Arabic teacher to explain. For Mayed, can sit closer to his teacher and make
sure he is involved (as much as he can) with the lesson. Expectations of remaining focus
and behavior before lessons (maybe with visuals) and then if he doing what the
teacher want i.e. focused praise him with stickers or class dojo. And for Nayef, she can sit with him and do
the practice fine motor skills with him, moving on to thicker, chunky
pencils and then when he is ready use a normal pencil. Or provide a rubber pencil if needed and practice pencil
control using tracing sheets and pens, paintbrushes etc.
Who is Involved?
My both Arabic and English teachers and I as a student teacher are
involved with the students, not just SEN students but all the students in the
classroom. However, if we needed any help for the students' behavior, we
involved the administration to solve the behavioral problems of the students. Their
parents and the school nurse were also involved for the identification and
solving addressing the problems related with the SENs.
The problem with SEN students
In the first week my MST asked me to find if there are any SEN in her
class and I noticed that there are three children had problems and I told her
who they are. And I sat with Shamsa, Mayed, and Nayef each one individual to
see what kind of problem they had, but for Shamsa I was worried about her because
when I taught her a lesson about numbers I gave her simple activity which is
count the numbers from 1 to 10 but she didn't know how to count in English. She
always mix it up when she count then I asked her to count in Arabic and she
count easily without any mistakes and my MST watching me and she was happy when
I told her about Shamsa because she didn't know that before. There were various
problems noticed mainly: lack of attention, hyperactivity, slow in studies and
excessive anxiety.
My opinion and what I will do in the future
My personal opinion regarding the TP is that ‘TEACHING
PRACTICE’ is very crucial and popular practice because it gave me the
opportunity and exposure towards teaching system and teaching experience.
Moreover, it brought me in the quality and skills a good teacher should have.
As a teacher, addressing needs of every single individual is a must and I
acquired that skills at this school. SENs as slow learners and gifted and
talented should be dealt in different ways so as to bring the best of each
single individual. Gifted and talented and slow learners should be identified
properly in the beginning of the session so as to devise correct way of
teaching.
I will be doing my level best to include IEP for my lessons
so as to bring SENs in the main stream of teaching. I will also be seeking the
help of all the individual concerned starting from the co –workers, parents and
administration for the identification of SEN and addressing their concerns
through extension, modification, acceleration. Diagnostic measures will be
applied in all the areas possible to make my instructional strategies effective
and innovative, I will also make my lessons interesting for all levels.
Conclusion
I have learnt a lot from Al Sho'aa KG School. It has helped
me personally and professionally, enabling me to deal with SEN students because
I didn't face any problem while dealing with them that is why I consider myself
as a good teacher and the students feel comfortable with me. I would like to
thank all the people for their full-fledged support to bringing the best in me boosting
my morale and confidence as a teacher.
